How to Wear the Cut-Out Trend Over 50
Am I too old for the cut-out trend? Is cut-out clothing age appropriate for midlife women? We have all heard many times that we should be wearing what makes you feel good, however, there is something to be said about keeping your integrity. If you’re looking for tips on How to Wear the Cut-Out Trend Over 50 then rule number one is to wear what you are confident in and be mindful about going with popular trends if they do not fit your individual style. I personally do not like exposing too much skin, especially in a bathing suit. Although, I follow a woman in her sixties on Instagram who rocks a bikini. She looks fantastic and has the confidence to go with it. That said, age shouldn’t deter us from what to wear. How we feel when we try something on and glance in the mirror is the only way to find the real answer.
Yes, cut out clothing can be appropriate for women in our age group, you just need to be selective about choosing a style. I found this out months ago while shopping with my daughter in law. I spotted a dress at Nordstrom with small triangle cutouts along the midriff. Immediately, I assumed that it would bear too much and continued swiping across the racks. For some reason, I was drawn back to this dress, I hesitated but my daughter in law encouraged me to try it on. I loved it and the cut outs weren’t at all making me feel self-conscious. In an instant I was standing in the checkout line with my credit card in hand.
Do not rule out a cut out!
Designers have been quite inventive in making sure cut out clothing would appeal to all figure types and age groups by strategically placing slits, and other geometric shapes in clothing. The location is essential, remember this when shopping. The tiniest opening can be very effective, but it really depends on where it lays, as it shouldn’t make you feel uneasy. I passed on many blouses with a slit down the front for this reason.
Julia Roberts’ dress in Pretty Woman may have been one of the most popular cut outs duplicated, but there are many options to choose from without having to show your midriff.

Here’s what women our age group can wear appropriately. Let’s start at the top, a subtle and effective way to add interest in clothes is by showing just a little skin with a slit near your shoulder. If you would like to try a bolder statement, look for small side slits at the midriff or waistline, other ways to add interest with cut out openings are with keyhole backs, or a sleeve with a peak a boo opening.
They also have cut out one piece bathing suits which are a nice alternative for someone who is shy about wearing a bikini, such as myself.
I don’t think this trend is going anywhere, and it is a look that we can all wear. Do not rule out a cut out!
